What is the difference between these two cookies?

Macarons and macaroons are entirely different cookies. A macaroon is coconut based, whereas a macaron is meringue based.

A macaron is a sweet meringue-based confection made with egg white, icing sugar, granulated sugar, almond powder or ground almond, and food coloring.


A macaroon is a small biscuit/cookie, typically made from ground almonds (the original main ingredient, coconut, and/or other nuts or even potato, with sugar and sometimes flavorings, jam and/or a chocolate coating.
